Lagos — Six persons including two staff of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service have been arrested in Lagos by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) special taskforce for possessing fake insurance certificate.
They were alleged to be in possession of fake third party motor insurance certificate and have been issuing same to unsuspecting members of the public.
The arrests were made following a raid on the premises of the motor vehicle licensing office in Ikeja.
It could be recalled that a similar raid by the task force in Mabushi and Area 1, all in Abuja, some weeks back had about 12 persons arrested for allegedly issuing fake third party motor insurance. The leader of the team who raided the Lagos licensing office, Adamu Balanti, said the exercise is preparatory to commencement of enforcement of compulsory insurances in September this year.
He said those arrested have been handed over to the Area F police station in Ikeja.
The Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Fola Daniel last week told reporters in Lagos that NAICOM will make the exercise a routine one across the nation.
He said though the official commencement of the enforcement of the compulsory insurance would be in September, it has already commenced unofficially.
